"Kitsune no Yomeiri" by Asai Chû ( ~1907)

To preface this ritual
write-up I had a knee injury when this rite happened so I could not
fully participate in elements like the working which was a dance. I
also barely made it to the ritual having a lot of things come up
while I was trying to leave and delays along the way.

That
said this rite had three altars set up to the right of the main area
(west) the Nature Spirits, to the rear (North) the Ancestors, and the
left (East) the Shining ones. The ritual was begun with a procession
and since it was dedicated to the Trooping Fairies a good portion of
the folk were invited to process around the rest of the group to
represent the fey. I stayed with the group watching the procession on
the fey due to my knee injury. Following the procession the
out-dwellers (including those trooping fey who were “monstrous not
in appearance but in intent”) were offered a sacrifice in return
for not interfering with the rite. The Earth Mother was called upon
followed by the Powers of Inspiration. The Folk were then led in a
light hearted guided meditation going under the fairy mound.

Our
Gatekeeper Garanus Crane was called upon and the gates were then
opened. Those we could then stood up and began the processing main
part of the ritual. First the folk processed to the altar of the
Ancestors who were called. The Folk then processed the Nature Spirits
altar who were called. And Finally the folk processed to the altar of
the Shining Ones who were called upon.

It was then the time
for public offerings. I offered Sake at the tree of the nature
spirits to the Fox Spirits I work with and those of the area. I then
offered incense to Brigid for helping heal my Knee as it had somewhat
improved from the previous day when I had made a sacrifice asking for
help during a ritual I conducted at home. After the public offering
the trooping fey were called upon and another round of public
offerings were held.

I offered a decent amount of copal resin
to the trooping fey as an apology if I had committed any offense
since I had some many obstacles getting to the ritual and before that
earlier in the month was a lore meeting. Getting to that lore meeting
was a major effort even though the meeting location was less than a
block from my house. I kept losing things and had to go back ending
up walking back and forth about nine times then after sharing some
lore about the fey and similar magical creatures in folklore from the
local area I encountered a large amount of hardship. This included my
knee suddenly taking a massive turn for the worse – were it had
before been healing very well it suddenly developed massive amounts
of pain and a rush to the doctor. I also lost a few items that seem
to have disappeared in transit. I also had a few issues at work where
situations beyond my control came crashing down upon me in the past
few weeks. I got a strong indication that I had offended then fey by
sharing bits of local folklore I had tracked down and hopefully the
gifts (and more in the future along with others I have offered) will
help alleviate the offense.

Following the public sacrifices,
the omens were taken from the Ogam by Shaneen:
From the Ancestors:
Holly (Tinne), giving the gift of balance.
From the Spirits of
Nature: Yew (Ioho), giving the gift of ancient wisdom.

And from the Shining Ones:
Vine (Muin), giving the gift of inspiration.

The waters were
then blessed and shared among the folk and the able processed to an
area to perform the Crane Dance for the enjoyment and giving energy
to the trooping fey. The Crane Dance was modeled on both the square
dance and a West Country dance unfortunately (or fortunately due to
my lack of grace) due to my knee I did not take part in the dancing.

Processing back the fey were then thanked followed by each of
the kindreds individually. Garanus was called and thanked as the
gates were closed. The Powers of inspiration were thanked and lastly
the Earth Mother was thanked.

I had a lot mixed thoughts about
the rite mostly at my misfortune that may have been coming from the
spirits of the occasion. While for most among the folk it was a
wimisical happy rite for me the goal was propitiation of the spirits.
I've had some hopeful omens that this mess may be soon behind me and
I remain hopeful going forward that the amends ares being made and
the past few weeks of extreme troubles will be ending.

The Spring Equinox rite for
Three Cranes Grove ADF honored Artemis and Hephaestus. It was
conducted at the Spring Hollow Lodge at Sharon Woods Metropark in
Westerville Ohio. To begin with Shawneen, a member of the grove, led
the folk in a short meditation remembering the time when they were
most connected to nature and a meet and greet exercise. This was
followed my the procession into the ritual area from the outside
where we had gathered. On the way in we where purified with water and
incense. The Outdwellers were offered whiskey in exchange for not
interrupting the rite and then the ritual proper began.

Since
this was a Greek flavored ADF rite Hestia was honored first with wine
then the Earth Mother in the form of Gaia was called and honored. The
nine muses were called upon for inspiration and the folk were then
led in the two powers meditation. The hallows were hallowed next –
the fire lit from Hestia's flame, the well silvered (by sinking some
silver into it), and since it was a Grecian rite a stone annotied as
the omphalos to stand at the center of the worlds. Rev. Michael
Dangler then called upon Garanus Crane to serve as gatekeeper and
asked him to open the gates through the hallows.

Now with the
portals opened the kindred were called upon. First called were the
Ancestors then the Nature Spirits, and last but not least the Shining
Ones. This was followed by a round of general offerings from the folk
– at this point I offered incense to a fox spirit I work with. Next
the two deities of the occasion were called upon and honored
separately first Artemis and then Hephaestus followed by another
round of offerings from the folk. I offered incense to each of the
deities of the rite.

Anthony – a member of the grove then
took the Omens from the Greek Alphabet Oracle.
From the Kindreds:
Rho, interpreted as wait until things are good.
From the Artemis:
Beta, interpreted as she was there and guiding us.
From the
Hephaestus: Alpha, interpreted as the gift of everything.

This
was followed by a final sacrifice of thanks to Artemis &
Hephaestus.

The waters were blessed with light shining the
virtues of the gifts into the waters. The waters were distributed and
ingested by the folk so that the gifts may flow to the folk. The
Working part of the right then commenced; The tools had been piled
onto a table in the center of the ritual area before the rite and
they were now to be blessed with the waters in addition to the hands
of the folk who wanted their hands blessed. As the blessing was
occurring Hephaestus was called upon and sound of a hammer
rhythmically hitting steel sounded as a member of the grove used a
sacred hammer to hit a block.

After the working Artemis and
Hephaestus were thanked followed by each of the kindreds. Then the
hallows were de-hallowed and Garanus the gatekeeper thanked. The
muses nine were thanked then Gaia as the Earth Mother thanked and
finally as it was a Greek rite Hestia who is always honored first and
last was thanked.

Overall this rite especially the working was
rather powerful and while I couldn't connect well with one of the
deities of the occasion when we did a grove meditation a few weeks
beforehand it was a good rite.

As such I end up listening to a decent number of podcasts. So for a bit of randomness here's a quick list of the podcasts/downloadable radio shows I'm currently listening to (in no particular order):

Edit: 10/1/2016
I'd like to like to add two more really good podcast I've been listening to:
Edit: 2/12/2017Revised and updated!

Religion/Magic Podcasts

Aeon Byte Gnostic Radio
http://thegodabovegod.com/
A good little podcast exploring the gnostic perspective and associated spiritualities. My main quibble is that the intro bits can sometimes go on a bit too long such as 15-30 minutes.

The Astrology Podcast
http://theastrologypodcast.com/
A really good podcast focusing on astrology and astrology topics. One of their bests was a really good discussion on Astrology & fake news. The podcasters traced the NASA Zodiac thing from a NASA Kid's
page to a click-bait blog advertising mill to Facebook and beyond. It
also has a lot of good discussion on the history of Astrology
such as how and why the Tropical system exists as it does today. There
is also a bit on intellectual laziness in research and criticism. The
page itself also provided a timeline showing how the NASA Zodiac fake news grew and spread. Good Stuff.

Beyond Belief
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006s6p6
Very
much like 'In Our Time' 'Beyond Belief' has host Ernie Rea gather a
panel of experts for a chat. The main difference here is that this show
is focused exclusively on religion and spirituality. It's a very great
show if you're interested in a great range of religions and topics in
religion.

The Celtic Myth Podshow
http://celticmythpodshow.com/
A really good podcast retelling Celtic Myths.

Deeper Down the Rabbit Hole
http://deeper-down-the-rabbit-hole.com/
One
of the better magic interview podcasts, this show hosted by Andrieh
Vitimus and Jason Colwell is the cream of the crop. Featuring vetted
guests and a no-nonsense attitude this is quite possibly the podcast you
should be listening to if you practice magic. I have much respect for
Andrieh and his works and it's always a treat to listen to his
interviews and follow along to the broadcasted rituals.

Druidcast
http://www.druidry.org/druid-way/resources/druidcast-obod-podcast
The official podcast of OBOD (the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids) hosted by the man himself, Damh the Bard. This podcast is all sorts of wonderful with great "Talky Bits" from people both inside and outside of the Druid community and wonderful music. Go check it out, you won't regret it.

Heart and Soul
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002vsn4
A
great BBC program focusing on topics in religions & spirituality
around the world with intersting topics like the history of mosques in
America, the rise of the occult in modern Russia, and Lulik the
traditional religion of East Timor.

The Hermetic Hour
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/the-hermetic-hour
Poke Runyon and the OTA (Ordo Templi Astarte)'s
podcast. This podcast is hosted by one of the greats of the magical
community, Poke Runyon, who rediscovered and popularized the technique
of using black mirrors for Solomonic and other grimoric based magic. He
also heads the OTA, a Neo-Pagan based Ceremonial Magic order which does
some very interesting adaptions of traditional Ceremonial Magic.

The Higherside Chats
http://thehighersidechats.com/
This is a stoner conspiracy podcast and I'll be honest - I can't stand to listen to a number of the shows but some are really interesting it just depends on the guests and he has had a number of good guests from John Michael Greer to Peter Levenda to Gordon White. Other episode I enjoy because I find the odder far out conspiracies such as elves working with the US government to be fun. Also there was an interesting episode where American UFO folklore was smashing into encounter/tales that could come out
of more traditional folklore with animals acting as messengers of the
gods and/or shape shifting tricksters.

Interfaith Voices
http://interfaithradio.org/
A rather good weekly radio show that is broadcast on many NPR stations that focuses on religious and interfaith issues.

Mysterious Universe
http://mysteriousuniverse.org/category/podcasts/
A fun podcast featuring a couple of guys talking about paranormal topics and news bits. A rather fun and humorous listen.

New World Witchery
https://newworldwitchery.com/
Hosted
by Cory and Lane this is a really great podcast covering American folk
magic traditions (such as Hoodoo, Granny Magic, New England Witchcraft,
Pow-wow, Etc.) and general American folklore (and the Folklore podcasts
have spun-off into a side podcast Chasing Foxfire.
Includes a number of really good interviews, practical spell
work/techniques, and decent research on the various traditions covered
(one particular highlight is the episode on Pow-wow ). Highly recommend for American magicians if only for the lore.

Occult of Personality
http://occultofpersonality.net/
Quite
possibly the greatest occult interview show out there - with great
interviews with some of the best and interesting people in the occult
and pagan communities this podcast is one I try not to miss despite its
semi-erratic schedule.

Part the Mists Podcast
http://ptmpod.libsyn.com/
A podcast that's just starting up from two members of ADF's Columbia
protogrove. This seems like it will develop into a good ADF/Druidy
centric podcast. There is already a good dynamic between the hosts (Jonathan and Arin) and it has promise.

Radio Free Golgotha
https://radio-free-golgotha.squarespace.com/
An excellent podcast from Al Cummins & Jesse Hathaway Diaz that explores western folk magic especially Mexican and European Catholic traditions.

Rune Soup Podcast
http://runesoup.com/category/podcast/
Another
great occult interview show hosted by Rune Soup's Gordon White. Quite possibly the best magical podcast I listen to - it never fails to bring on interesting, knowledgeable, and utterly solid guests. This podcast is responsible for me buying several books and seeking more than a few things out. Top Notch Stuff!

Skeptiko
http://skeptiko.com/
A fascinating podcast hosted by Alex Tsakiris that explores fringe science & spirituality such as parapsychology, remote viewing, and non-materialists/idealists views of the universe.

Ultraculture
https://soundcloud.com/jason-louv
Another good occult interview podcast from occult author Jason Louv (most famous for compiling Generation Hex)
VH Frater BT's Esoterinerd Podcast
http://edward-reib.com/vhfraterbt/
From
Edward Reib this occult interview (well mostly interview) show focusing
mostly on the Golden Dawn stream with side trips to topics such as The
Source Family and Andrew Da Passano (who taught a westernized form of
Tibetan Buddhism). Having recently caught up with the show it's a really
good show if you have a strong interest in Western Ceremonial magic.
Some highlights are the Andrew Da Passano series and the interview with Bryin Dall who was the man behind the 'Golden Dawn - LVX' Album that had a musical take on GD rituals.
History/Informational Podcasts

The British History Podcast
http://www.thebritishhistorypodcast.com/
Quite
frankly one of the best history podcasts I've ever heard. It's been
covering the history of the island of Britain in chronological fashion
since 2011 and is only now just getting to the life of Alfred the Great.
Jamie (the host) has done tons of research and spent a lot of time on
the oft neglected era of the Anglo-Saxons bring the period to life and
showing how it really is the basis of the English part of British
history and traditions. Give it a listen, it's wonderful and its the
only podcast for which I've signed up for a membership for the Members
Only Podcasts which covers side topics (such as the culture of the Norse
in Scandinavia) in great detail.

Chasing Foxfire
https://chasingfoxfire.com/
A spin-off from New World Witchery, this podcast explores American Folklore and provides a fascinating lens on American folk culture.
In Our Time
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qykl
Quite
simply this BBC program is Melvyn Bragg grabbing a bunch of experts on a
variety of subjects ranging from culture & history to modern
science and having them talk and/or debate on a panel. It's always very
varied and fascinating - a good sample would be to check out the Essential 10 episodes chosen by the production team.

No Such Thing As a Fish
http://qi.com/podcast/
A
podcast featuring the researchers of QI, this is the most irreverent
factual podcasts out there. In between the interesting factoids there is
plenty of joke and humor making this podcast a sheer delight to listen
to.
The Completely Unnecessary Podcast
http://thepunkeffect.com/category/completely-unnecessary-podcast-2/
Hosted by Pat the NES Punk and Ian the CU Podcast covers Gaming and Movie news with an emphasis on retro. It's my to go podcast for gaming news and they've covered things such as the saga of the Retro VGS/Coleco Chameleon (which at one point they were at the center of when the head of that project started attacking them as 'Drunken Idiots' for their coverage of that console. They have a good bit of humor and a very good dynamic that makes this a very entertaining news podcast.
The NerdCubed Podcats
https://soundcloud.com/nerdcubed/
From
Youtubers NerdCubed, Mattophobia, and Many A True Nerd this podcast
officially focuses on video games but often runs over into movies,
British and American Politics, and anything else they happen to fancy at
the time with a good bit of humour and in-jokes.

Podquistion
http://www.thejimquisition.com/category/podquisition/
Hosted by Jim Sterling, Gavin Dunne (Miracle of Sound), and Laura Kate the Podquision is hard to describe. It's technically a new rundown podcast but it's most the group discussing the gaming industry and anything thing else they fancy which often leads to crude humor, brilliant comedy, and the occasional serious bits such the end of episode 68 where Laura talked about her battles with depression right after they had spent a good bit of time on sex jokes. It's got a great mix of the crude and serious and is often the highlight of my week.
The rite began with a pre-ritual
briefing and we were led outside of the ritual area for a centering
exercise focusing on the seasons beginning to turn from winter to
spring. When the ritual team was ready we were led back into the
ritual area being purified as we walked in with water from a sprig
and incense. As always the first honor and sacrifice was given to the
Earth Mother. This was followed by a general purification and an
offering to inspiration in the form of Agneos. This was followed by a
sacrifice to the outdwellers (Strong Coffee) so they might not
interfere with our rite. The Two Powers meditation was next followed
by the portal song with the hollowing of the hallows.

Garanus
crane was called upon as gatekeeper to open the gates by the grove.
Offerings were then made to the three kindred. I took this
opportunity to make offering to some fox spirits I work with. Then
the deity of the occasion, Brigando, was called upon and the folk
brought praise and offerings. During this time an effigy of Brigando
(the Brideog) was taken around and all of the folk got some time with
her. After this candles were lit to the poem “Nineteen Candles for
Brigid” by Philip Carr-Gomm. Teams of two paired off and I read
“Eighth is the strength of your oxen of Dil - Fea and Fernea, the
red and the black“ while another grove member lit a
candle.

Following this Omens were taken using the Ogham ask
what blessings each of the three kindred had for us. From the
Ancestors we received muin, the vine, which was interpreted by the
seer as inspiration. From the nature spirits Eabadh, The White
Poplar, interpreted as buoyancy and overcoming obstacles. Finally
from the shining ones we received Duir, the Oak strength. Upon the
pronouncement that the omens were indeed good the priests then
invoked them into the waters which were shared with the folk.

After
this was the working in which the Three Cranes Grove healing quilt
was recharged for the year with the folk intoning and channeling
healing energy into it. Brigando was then thanked followed by the
three kindreds and Angneos for participating in the rite. Garanus
crane was then thanked and asked as gatekeeper to close the gates and
the hallows were returned to their normal state. The Earth Mother was
finally thanked ending the rite.

The rite was followed by a
walk and sing to the nearby bog to deposit the sealed offering that
had been sunk in the well in the past year. This year there was no
ice so it was easily chucked in so that the offering were taken from
the secular world and given to the gods and also in the far future
confuse any archaeologists digging on the site.

Over all the
rite was moving experience and while I was tired and still semi-ill I
had a wonderful time as Imbolc is traditionally one of our biggest
and most important grove rites.

I haven't used this thing in a while and I need a place to do an ADF Dedicant Path Journal so this blog is reactivated and rededicated to that purpose. Perhaps I might even turn this into a decent blog when this stuff is all said and done. Anyways, I've grabbed Rev. Michael J. Dangler's The ADF Dedicant Path Through the Wheel of the Year and one of the first exercises is a set of questions so might as well as get crackin'.

Why have you chosen to take the first steps on the Dedicant Path?

Because it's something I want to accomplish so I can look into getting more involved with the ADF and perhaps join a guild and take their training courses. Also doing this is an attempt to get my spiritual life back in order after falling off the wagon and getting lax during a period where I had some dark times.

Is this a step on your path, or will this become the Path itself?

Oh definitely a step on the path, as I stated before I'm mostly doing this so I can move on to better things after rebuilding my basics of practice.

What do you expect to learn?

From the study material I'm not expecting to learn much more than I've already learned and studied. I've already read a lot including checking out more than a few of the books on the DP Reading List for my own personal edification. Instead what I hope to learn is how to re-balance my life. Part of the reason I came to fall off the wagon was trying to focus too much energy into side events and having a kind of chaotic schedule which tossed me to the proverbial waves. I'm hoping getting back to basics will help me right my spiritual ship and help with getting a lot of other things back on track.

What would you like to get out of this journey?

As I said above getting my spiritual ship righted and rebuilding my currently messy foundation. From there I'd like to get more involved in the ADF and the general neo-pagan community again.

Do you know where this path will take you?

Nope. But I believe that's where the fun lies. :p

<strike>If you have just joined ADF, why have you chosen to work on this immediately?</strike>
If you have been in ADF for a long time, why are you starting only now?

I've been in the ADF for quite a while and I've attempted to do the DP several times. My biggest stumbling block is really finding a good connection with an IE Hearth Culture. My worship has been across the map and I tend to take interest in what I call bridge deities such as Epona, Saravati, or Mithra(s) who manage to jump cultures. Not only that I find myself often looking towards rather 'mixed' cultures such as the Indo-Greek Kingdom in Gandhara, Roman Britain, or Hellenistic Egypt.
No one particular IE culture has really felt as a solid home to me.

The culture question has always been a big stumbling block with me and the ADF since at least to me it feels like hearth cultures are almost treated as if they're solid things that do not mix and don't really change over time when in reality cultures show a good bit of variation in both time and place. Each Greek polis had varying myths and a few disagreement on who was one of the 12 Olympians, not to mention the fact that the Greek religion of Bronze Age looked rather different from the practices in the Hellenistic period. Not to mention the fact that telling the difference between a Celt and German in the border areas was a very fuzzy thing. Boiling everything down to ideal version of these cultures is a useful tool but it also feels kind of modern. I also suspect that Ronald Hutton's suspicions are correct when he speculates that the whole concept of a Irish-Celtic in the Tuatha de Danaan was possibly invented by storytellers in the early Christian era who brought various intenational and local deities together in a systemic pantheon influnced by the Greco-Roman myths.* Again, it's useful but it tends to paint a more homogeneous picture of the Irish Celts then probably ever existed in practice.

I also have issues with the the stance that I see popping up in the ADF calling Hinduism not IE when it's very much a living and evolving set of religions which spawned from an IE base. To me declaring that it's not IE because it has a lot of non-IE elements seems to be a very reaching argument. If we applied this standard to other IE religions would we not have to toss out say a good chunk of Greek myths and practices since they were influenced by both non-IE local peoples of what became Greece and other nearby non-IE peoples such as the Phonecians and others from the Ancient Near East? That is not to say that modern Hinduisms should be accorded a place in the ADF the Vedic period is a good stopping point to avoid stepping on the toes of modern ethnic practitioners.

Again it's just that our clear cut views of culture seem to be fairly modern inventions when in practice the reality seems to have been a lot more fuzzy and varied. Yes, they're useful and certainly great for study but I worry that we're projecting our ideal versions of culture back on to an idealized version of the past while we're trying to build a religion in a modern era.

A neat answer to culture is a can of worms to me maybe it's because identify a lot with the fox - a very liminal animal - that leads me to focus on messy 'liminal cultures' of boarder areas/periods and shines a questionable light on a lot of the neat cherished cultural ideals by noticing the fuzzy. I don't have any problems with these modern homogenized reconstructions as modern practices but I find myself highly acutely aware of the more fuzzy nature of culture.

If I were to look at my ancestors for a guide besides a dash of Cherokee, my ancestors were pretty much all from the British Isles. But that's it's own can of worms since there I have Welsh, Scottish (Ulster-Scot), and English ancestors. Not to mention the fact that Roman culture was dominant for a period in the southern part of the isle of Britain. It's a mess but if I have to find a hearth culture to use it's probably going to be from that crazy mixed up island. I could do Vedic since I'm very close to Saravati but I'm close to her more modern forms and a write up would probably turn into a rambling rant like this question that I should just end here.

*Ronald Hutton, The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles (Oxford: Blackwell, 1993), 152.

Does it look hard or easy?

On bare paper it looks very easy... However keeping it up will probably be hard. As will be the cultural questions I rambled about above.

Which requirements appear to be difficult to you now, and which appear to be easy?

The book reviews and knowledge essays look very easy as I've been in the ADF a while and read a few of the books. The difficult one is going to be the essay on developing a spiritual practice as that is something I'm going to have to work at and struggle with finding a "solid" hearth culture.

Do you have doubts, questions, or concerns that you need to ask about?

Probably the cultural questions which I rambled about earlier. Arcane Flamehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09935554032702929883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3748529588077096201.post-59397438105665979452012-06-22T12:01:00.001-07:002012-06-22T21:05:32.622-07:00My Top 6 G1 MLP CharactersWell, looks like I may be presenting a 'G1 is more Hardcore than G4' panel at Trotcon so to celebrate:

My Personal Top 6 G1 MLP Characters:

1. Wind Whistler - I've harped on her before but this pegasus mare is awesome. She's an extremely intelligent and often downright cunning pony who often jumps up to be the leader in a crisis. She does have some issues with being wordy / technobable and favors logic over emotions to the point that she's extremely stoic. I just find her awesome as she just doesn't fit with the rest of the ponies at all and would probably be more at home in Star Trek. Given what happened in 'Crunch the Rockdog' where she sacrificed Truly to get a chance of hitting the Rockdog with the heartstone to save everypony else she'd pass that 'Bridge Officer's Test' quite easily.

Closest G4 Equivalent: Twilight Sparkle - if she was mixed with Mr. Spock.

2. Fizzy - This Pony. This pony single hoofedly broke my brain. She's a happy-go-lucky, klutzy, scatterbrained unicorn mare who has the power of creating and controlling bubbles and who has the occasional moments of awesome (like drawing off the fire from the demon trees in the Shadow Forest so that everypony else could escape). She is also the most prominent of the few 'Twinkle-Eyed Ponies' who have gems for eyes. She's pretty much the Derpy/Ditzy Doo of G1.

Then I found out the official canon back story of the 'Twinkle-Eyed Ponies': Turns out Fizzy spent a good bit of her life as an horribly mistreated slave forced to work in a hazardous mine by the 'Jewel Wizard'. She lost her sight but when she was rescued by Applejack (who killed the Jewel Wizard and destroyed his gem throne). Some of the magical gem shrapnel from the exploding jewel throne embedded itself in her corneas and thanks to the gems she regained her sight. Dear feaking gods. It would be like finding out G4 Derpy/Ditzy's official back story is that she was horrible mistreated by an abusive alcoholic father and her eyes are that way because she was once nearly beaten to death before Applejack saved her by killing her father. Yeah. Anyway, I now have immense levels of respect for Fizzy.

Since the original page hosting the comic got overloaded:
Applejack's Amazing Adventure - 4

Closest G4 Equivalent: Derpy/Ditzy Doo

3. Gusty - Ah G1's Action Mare. Gusty is an impatient brave headstrong white colored unicorn mare with a red striped mane who is always rushing headlong into a fight and usually getting her flank handed to her as a result. She also isn't a smart pony and she has a bad habit of whining, being the occasional grouch, and dropping wisecracks. But she'll be a whiny grouchy and an ass one moment then in the next moment the kindest, bravest, and most noble pony in the show. Hrmmm... This all sounds familiar... One big problem with her is that her voice (done by Nancy Cartwright) sounds rather close to Bart Simpson's voice so its kinda jarring.

Closest G4 Equivalent: I'm going to cheat here with a fan work - but it fits so well: Blackjack from FoE: Project Horizons.

4. Paradise - She's a pegasus mare in a magical land who loves legends and fantasy and once asked "Why can't my life be more like a fairy tale?". Then again she lives in Ponyland, which seems to be full of slavers, crazed evil overlords, sealed ancient evils all about the place, and a lot of the G1 MLP stories feature near apocalypses. Yeah, I'd want to escape that place and live in a generic happy fantasy land too. She usually is the storyteller or dropping lore exposition. She also has a glorious epic fail trying to hammer a nail.

Closest G4 Equivalent: Going by her card description of being obsessed by legends and fairy tales: Sugar Grape

4. North Star - An adventurous explorer pegasus mare with a compass and star cutie mark. She had a Big Damn Hero moment in Return of Tambelon by hitting the ancient bell and thus screwing with the source of Grogar & Tambelon's powerful magic while the other ponies distracted Grogar. She also is a mare who cannot resist a big door with a 'Don't Touch' sign on it despite a warning that the door holds back an ancient evil (she's probably not safe around big red buttons ether).

Closest G4 Equivalent: Daring Do.

5. Heart Throb - A romance loving pegasus mare who is all about sharing love and dreams of meeting her Prince Charming... And she pictures him as a human - which is a bit disturbing especially when the fantasy comes to life and starts reciprocating. She's usually more on the funny side since most of the episodes are action & adventures.

Closest G4 Equivalent: Princess Cadance with a bit of Rarity and... Lyra...

Honorable Mention: Masquerade - This twinkle-eyed pegasus mare is master of disguise, infiltration, and general spying. She doesn't show up much (or does she?) but where she does she has rather interesting skill set and used in plans such as posing as Grogar's second-in-command bray from a distance in costume.

Closest G4 Equivalent: Not sure... Finally managed to track him down (despite the fact that he's been more or less staring me in the face for a while now):

It's Hayagriva and his Vedic prototype Dadhikrāvan!
linking ponies with Greek gods... So I ended up writing a wall of text
on Pegasus & Rainbow Dash.

If we're going Greek... We have a horse god here.

Pegasus is Chrysaor's brother. It's a weird version of the 'Horse
Twins' myth like the Indic Asvins and the (also) Greek Dioscuri (Castor
& Pollux). In this variant though instead of
two horsemen, one who is mortal and one who is immortal, what resulted
from Poseidon and Medusa was a mortal human and his brother... an
immortal horse god. Later myths paired him with Perseus and Heracles
because flying around on a divine winged horse is the pimpin-est ride
yo.

If anyone owns him it's Zeus who made him the bearer of his
Thunderbolts and some weather functions (this probably happened due to
his link with a Luwian weather god named pihassas who is ether his
origin or a deity who was fused with him later in lore and the fact that
the rising of his constellation marked the beginning of Spring and the
start of the seasonal rainstorms in Greece - Winter Wrap-up! tongue ).
His other side is that he is the horse of the muses and there are
several springs Hippocrene sacred to Pegasus & the Muses in Greece
where he stuck the ground with his hooves and the waters of inspiration
burst forth from the ground.

If Pegasus had a pony it would
have to be Rainbow Dash - because let's face it she's Pegasus' own
Pegasus: Head of the Ponyville Weather Patrol, Inspired the rest of the
mane six to get their cutie marks with her bursting Sonic Rainboom, her
emphasis on action, her heroics, et cetera.

Also nit-picky but you're thinking Helios whom Apollo was connected with... The appropate deity connections would be:
Helios & Selene (Greek) or Sol & Luna (Roman).

Interesting enough in the story book that came with the molded toys Princess Luna is called Princess Selena.
Robert Schuler (“W. B. Yeats: Artist or Alchemist?” Review of English Studies 22:37ff) interprets this last line as relating to Yeats's interest in sexual magic. Schuler also notes that the lily and rose in alchemical literature symbolize the moon and the sun, the white and red tinctures in the alchemical process. More detail can be found in Gorski's Yeats and Alchemy (State University of New York, 1996).
I prepared this when doing a presentation on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Indo-European Mythology. Again this is maybe coincidence but it's always stood out to me.

Anyways in Figure 1 we have Lyra Heartstrings. Figure 2 is the Awen symbol, Awen is the Welsh word for inspiration and often poetic or musical inspiration. It was invented by Edward Williams (aka. Iolo Morganwg) and is often used as symbol for gorseddau in Britain and used by such groups as The National Gorsedd of the Bards of the Isle of Britain and The Cornish Gorsedh as well as Meso-Druidic and Neo-Druidic Groups. The gorseddau are big promoters of traditional literary scholarship, music, and poetry. As seen in Figure 4 they typically wear a shade of blue as a traditional Bardic color (the National Gorsedd of the Bards of the Isle of Britain having an interesting shade for this discussion). Finally compare the Awen Symbol with Lyra's Cutie Mark (Figure 4) and notice how it very much resembles the three line Awen Symbol put into a Lyre or Harp. It's probably just a coincidence but its always looked like it to me.Arcane Flamehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09935554032702929883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3748529588077096201.post-86123873108676161102012-03-17T16:07:00.000-07:002012-03-17T16:07:54.908-07:00LYRA GO BRAGH!!!

I have to say though that the prospects for this campaign aren't that good without really ether the US giving more hardware and intelligence tools to the Ugandan government or lots of US troops on the ground. In many respects this is a lot like the the Darfur crisis (in fact the LRA was a belligerent in that conflict supported by Sudanese government and committing atrocities against civilians at the behest of the Sudanese Government) where it's a horrible situation but doesn't effect the US enough to risk American soldier's lives against insurgents in a conflict that could end up deeply bogged down like the conflicts in Iraq & Afghanistan. I support the effort to get the US to help stopping Kony but he's a man with an army and lieutenants. As mentioned the the Miami Herald article he knows it's success or death (due to his War Crimes) so he isn't going to end things peacefully and nether will the others in the LRA power structure.

We really need to support this to get more pressure/attention on the situation and support for the work aiding civilians but the LRA isn't going to go down because of posters, Facebook posts, nor humanitarian aid. Nor is this without entanglements for the US, because while Sudan has officially turned against the LRA it probably still has a number of supporters in their government. In short I suggest supporting this but to have realistic hopes for the campaign.

We have to do better, but we have to also be realistic about it.Arcane Flamehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09935554032702929883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3748529588077096201.post-32719143590325614352012-02-29T13:36:00.004-08:002012-02-29T13:39:34.085-08:00Derpy Reality Tunnels!Ok, I need to stop now, I'm writing things like this reflecting on the hatred raised in the Derpy thing and before with the Ditzy Doo Vs. Derpy arguments and a few other things such as current American Society in general:

*In response to someone complaining about how the parents of the current generation were possibly more tolerant and inclusive (which is debatable on some matters)*

They also tended to indulge their children's wishes, and with the communications revolution these grown up children who are used to getting their own way and shaping everything can extend their reach over their own children. Also a major factor is the rise of more and more hard and reinforced reality tunnels by different subcultures in the US breaking off from the mainstream after the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War with the calls to a united vision and front becoming less and less important in the loss of a major threat. With the loss of the Soviet Threat there was less resistance to the segmentation of society and the communications revolution of the 1980s & 1990s only accelerated this trend allowing subcultures to break off more and more from the mainstream with their own news, services, and other facilities which are completely controlled by the subcultures and which strictly reinforce and amplify their own reality tunnels. Take a look at right wing Christians and the massive 'alternative' infrastructure they have created with 'Christian Media', 'Christian Businesses' (indexed here in Columbus through the 'Christian Blue Pages' and the little 'Christian Business' signs I keep noticing popping up), and 'Christian' alternatives to almost everything mainstream (the mainstream being greatly scorned).

The great effect of all this is that people are more intolerant to things coming in from outside of their own reality tunnel and the things that poke in are also increasingly drowned out by the drumbeat of the subcultural beliefs. The sheer strength of the greatly reinforced beliefs in their own reality tunnel make the follower view them as kind of a 'Master view' that is inherently correct and should dominate the 'weaker' others and should override their signals by force if necessary. This has resulted in the massive disconnect between bronies and the mainstream audience and the internet wars of words over rather stupid things like this. Each subculture has become their own little Stalins attempting to airbrush everything counter to their views out of the photos of reality.Arcane Flamehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09935554032702929883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3748529588077096201.post-41103009141020982832012-02-27T17:53:00.002-08:002012-02-27T18:04:45.942-08:00Some thoughts on Fallout: Equestria & Fallout Equestria Project HorizonsI wrote a huge Wall of Text™ in a forum post about Fallout: Equestria and Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons and I might as well as post it here as it sums up why I like the fics a lot (Warning: some fairly minor spoilers here, original had a few major ones but they have been edited out as there is no hiding of spoilers here) - tl;dr version: Me probably over-analyzing a fanfic like the pretentious jackass I am.

Meh. I'll admit that F:OE could have probably been cut by a lot - but a lot of those extra bits are fun! I do think you may be missing the point of the fic though.

While there is a lot of grimdark, you also see occasional bits of whimsy and good as you go along in the story. Mostly these good bits are seen in a few of the memory orbs showing pre-war Equestria and some bits in the present which show hope for the future. A large part of the story is about how Equestria and the ponies eventually fell little by little (often through good intentions) into a horrible uncaring and hateful society. The other large part is finding the good that is deep down and going on to try and help make things better despite mistakes because giving up to wallow in one's self solves nothing and can in fact make the situation worse. One has to dare to care, so to speak, taking others' feelings into consideration, and doing what is right even if it is unpopular. Fallout seems to be kind of used as a metaphorical window dressing representing the utter break down of society to tell the true meat of the tale and it diverges heavily from Fallout's feel because of its themes (and also because the world of Equestria has a lot of fantasy in its roots since Faust used LotR, Narnia, mythology, and a few fantasy novels in originally creating the setting. One can't really get rid of them with out tossing out the core of Equestria as well).

I think it caught on because it is kind of a zeitgeist that mirrored how a good number of Bronies felt; the world is uncaring and in a metaphorical shambles (what with the economic situation and exploding political tensions) and this fic presented a character who rises above the ever-present sense of anomie (represented by the wasteland) and is inspired by visions of the old pre-conflict Equestria (our ponies) to try to restore the good using the Mane Six and pre-corruption Equestria as a model (for some reason a song is coming to mind here :p). Along the way LittlePip sees how good intentions and misunderstandings led to the corruption and destruction of old Equestrian society and learns from them and he also learns that even if one makes mistakes and fails causing hurt then one shouldn't give up but instead one should try harder to not make the mistake again in the future. Additionally, one should try to make up for the damage by doing good and continue by concentrating on the good that is inside us all.

As for the side fics: I've only really read Project Horizons which has similar themes but tends to have a more limited and personal scope. All of the mane characters have deep psychological wounds and the core focus is not on the individual vs. the sense of anomie in society (although that is still a major theme), the focus instead is more on dealing with one's own personal trauma and emotions (punctuated by light-hearted moments of awesome comic relief like the 'Queen Whiskey' bit). One deals with the emotional storms by finding strength in oneself through knowing one's self and the support of others. Another major theme is the dangers of repressing hurt, pain, and bad emotions until they explode and cause harm. On a certain level, I kind of find reading it a little therapeutic and kind of identify with Blackjack - although I've experienced nowhere near the sheer level of trauma she goes through - Blackjack is often the 'strong one' in public for others (heck, a former roommate openly said I was the person who most 'had their shit together' and I've ended up playing therapist to a bunch of people) but deep down inside Blackjack has a fair share of repressed guilt and trauma. Repressing her guilt, emotions, and trauma nearly destroys Blackjack (several times) and it is only when she starts to know herself and accept the guilt, emotions, and trauma that she can begin to heal with the help of her friends.Arcane Flamehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09935554032702929883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3748529588077096201.post-12552237800701488282012-01-29T05:48:00.000-08:002012-01-29T05:48:43.516-08:00Damn it Loki!!!Loki has been playing around with his 'Turn into a mare' spell recently...

Towards The Study of Pony Magic

Recently, I've been working on a side project to look into creating a magical system based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (MLP:FiM). Why? Pretty much just because it's a fun exercise and I consider myself to be a fan of the show. The show itself has great amount of well built mythos and systems within it starting from the opening myth of the battle between the sister goddesses of the sun and the moon which happened a thousand years before the setting of the show. The show features a good deal of elements in its story and setting that are reflected in many mythical systems (see my article on mythology and the opening 2 part episode) and is a fertile ground for use as a magical paradigm.

Magic, Shmagic!

In the recent era postmodern systems have been en vogue. Modern magic is no exception, noticing that very different magical systems with very different assumptions tended to work and what seems to be key is belief in the system. A number of modern magi have begun applying postmodern ideas to magic seeing the useful systems as internally consistent symbol sets.

For an example of how this works, let's look at the concept of Khaos – in the context of works like Hesiod's Theogony this describes the seething undifferentiated 'no thing' that is the primal state of the universe – from it all things in universe (both spiritual and material) arose. It is still there, on the deepest level everything still exists as Khaos, and all is connected like Indra's Net of Jewels. It is said of Indra's Net that when one looked into one jewel one also saw the refection of all the others in the net illustrating that within all pieces there was a reflection of the whole (a Holographic Universe).

Thus we have the Hermetic axiom 'as above, so below', the magical idea that the macrocosm (the universe at large) is reflected in the microcosm (our selves/minds), and thus we can make changes upon the microcosmic scale to get results within the large macrocosm provided that one is in right mode of consciousness.

What we do by using different symbol sets is that we are using different interfaces to understand and work with this Khaos (which is far beyond our limited understandings in any case). Now as long as they are internally consistent, it has been shown that the choice of symbol set matters little and results have been gotten even through use of fictional systems using pop culture (in fact I'd like to recommend Taylor Ellwood's great book on using magic based on fiction and Pop Culture: Pop Culture Magic).

Alternatively, of course, one may view this and other Divination systems through the lens of the physiological model in that one is contacting just contacting and working with one's own individual subconscious.

How would Ponies divine?

My first real work here has been a divination system after having seen a MLP:FiM Tarot spread and some people making pony tarot cards. But obviously this might not be a divination system which would exist within the show's world itself.

Let's say we lived in the world that the land of Equestrian inhabits... What would be used for divination? Horary Astrology would probably be of importance given the high amount of attention given the study of the heavens in MLP:FiM as seen in the large telescope in the capitol of Equestria Canterlot, the appearance of several ponies with astronomy related cutie marks seen in Canterlot (S01:E26 – The Best Night Ever), The stars aligning to allow the escape of Nightmare Moon from being sealed in the moon (S01:E01 – The Mare in the Moon), and Twilight Sparkle's special interest in the study of the skies.

Another possibility is scrying but this and horary astrology lack pony flair and require more than good bit of preparation, study, and practice before becoming very useable. But what other systems? Well when we look at the text in one of the books that Twilight is reading in S01:E01 – The Mare in the Moon we see that the writing system is composed of hieroglyphic signs and here we find a good basis for creating a divination system as historically writing systems such as the Runes, the Ogham, and the Greek Alphabet have been used as divination systems – the fact that this writing system contains a limited symbol set with easily understandable pictures makes it even easier to create a usable divination system especially if we augment it with a few extra symbols related to the show's mythos.

Below is a picture of my current 'beta' version of Pony Marks after playing with it for over a month (large size):

Meanings (left to right top to Bottom)

The Writing Marks:

The Foal or the Ass/mule – Ignorance, Foolishness, Stubbornness
(Lacking a visible mane or tail and large ears this is probably a foal or an Ass both of which are treated as foolish and/or ignorant in Equestria)

The Unicorn Horn – Power, Strength, Willpower
(The Magical powers of the Unicorn in MLP:FiM radiate from their horns)

The Tail – Retreat, Defeat
(As the expression turn tail and run!)

The Crystal Ball – Knowledge, Understanding, Wisdom, Vision, Clear Seeing
(Crystal Balls – are used primarily as scrying implements to gain knowledge)

The Spiral – Growth, Returning to the Center
(In the series part of Zacora's Cutie mark is a spiral and she is a hermit who apparently spends a good bit of time meditating)

The Star – Time, External Influences
(Stars of the same style were shown in the drawing converging to free Nightmare Moon)

The Horseshoe – Protection, a Journey, Good Fortune
(Horseshoes protect a horse's hooves and are indicative of travel – we also see horseshoes as good fortune)

The Lightning Bolt – A Quick & Sudden Change.
(Lighting appears and disappears quickly bring changes through it's power)

The Crescent Moon – The Mind, Mental States, Imagination, Magic
(The moon is traditionally connected with the mind (especially the subconscious mind) and magic).

The Unicorn Head – Nobility, Purity, Grace, Honor, Integrity.
(Here we draw on how we view the unicorn).

The Cosmic Marks

The Celestial Sun – Order, Control, Righteousness, Victory
(Here we draw upon the traits of the immortal sun goddess and ruler of Equestria in her form as Princess Celestia – supreme ruler of the cosmos who in the opening myth defeated Nightmare Moon to preserve harmony and became Celestia).

The Dark of the Moon – Chaos, Destruction, Jealousy, Darkness, Hate
(Here we draw upon the dark side of the Princess Luna – who through her jealousy of her elder sister became the demonic Nightmare Moon and sought to envelop the world in everlasting night).

The Elemental Marks

(based upon the medallions each pony of the mane cast received when the powers of the elements joined with them. The meanings are based upon their elemental names and their embodiment in the mane cast)

The Element of Kindness (Butterfly) – Kindness, Gentleness, Softness, Healing, Delicate
(Fluttershy)

The Element of Loyalty (Decorative Lightning Bolt) – Loyalty, Courage, Bravery, Swift Action, Fiery
(Rainbow Dash)

The Element of Honest (Apple) – Honest, Hard Work, Grounded, Earthy
(Applejack)

The Element of Laughter (Balloon) – Laughter, Fun, Folly, Random, Light Hearted, Airy
(Pinkie Pie)

The Element of Magic (Hexagram) – Magic, Harmony, Friendship, Understanding, Wisdom, Knowledge, Power
(Twilight Sparkle)

The Element of Generosity (Diamond) – Generosity, Hospitality, Wealth, Abundance, Creativity/Fertility, Graceful.
(Rarity)

Use of the Pony Marks
Warning: Here be more magic babble again.

In practice this systems works very much like the casting of the Runes or of the Ogham. These symbols are placed upon tokens and then placed into a bag. The Diviner then clears his mind utterly except for the question being sought and reaches into the bag to draw out the token or tokens (depending on the layout one is using) to yield an omen. One mark might be drawn for a simple question or a daily omen and for analyzing a situation multiple marks could be drawn to represent past, present, and future influences upon the situation (most Rune and Ogham layouts and methods will work).

What is most important in any use of this or any other divination system is trusting in the system and allowing your mind to be at rest so you can tap into the cosmic Khaos or to communicate with a chosen deity, spirit, or thoughtform.

An Example Three Mark Draw

As an example let's ask how Season 2 of MLP:FiM will turn out with a three mark draw for clarity:

The Element of Laughter, The Unicorn Horn, And the Unicorn Head.

Putting it all together - Season Two of Friendship is Magic will be full of fun & laughter, the show will continue to be powerful with a large fan following, and will be very well made.
So I used this as an flimsy excuse to create a Great and Powerful Trixie figure on that day as well:
I just saw this recently and man is it epic. You can see major influences that made it over to Friendship is Magic. The villain bits look just phenomenal - and maybe a bit too contrasting since it almost looks like a Metal Video is invading the land of the ponies.
